Success Stories from the TVET Network
Egyptian-European Technical University (EETU)
The Egyptian-European Technical University (EETU), in process of establishment, strives to be a pioneer in high-quality technical and interdisciplinary education with a strong focus on personality development and current labor market trends. Following the successful example of the German model of Universities of Applied Sciences (“Fachhochschulen”), strong links to vocational training and the industry are at the core of the university philosophy. Therefore, the EETU is setting up partnerships with Universities of Applied Sciences in the German-speaking region (Germany/Austria/Switzerland) introducing new fields of innovative and highly-demanded specializations which increases employability and drives the economic growth of the country. The establishment of the EETU is one of the key projects of the Modern Foundation for Development and Education Improvement (MDE), the latter acting as the umbrella of a broad scope of activities which include setting up a research council and a technical teacher training academy in the frame of the bilateral agreement between Germany and Egypt, support and development of existing vocational schools and education clusters, youth and women empowerment projects with the National Council for Women, training and supervision of capacity building programs, organizing workshops and forums related to the latest global trends in education (the most recent Forum in April titled “Innovation in Education”).
MDE/EETU is currently also working on the establishment of a vocational school according to the German dual system, which will be closely linked to the EETU and the integrated industries. First contacts with relevant stakeholders and expert know-how in this field have been established and are being developed.
Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW)
Qualified education is fundamental to the economic development of Egypt so that it creates prospects for young people. That’s why KfW is active in TVET promotion through a funding of EUR 50.5m (loans and grants) + EUR 20m (debt swap). The main objectives of KfW-funded projects are to improve employability through a labor-market oriented TVET. KfW supports the implementation of two Centres of Excellence in Hurghada and Aswan focusing on renewable energy and energy-efficiency-related training. Through a debt swap, KfW finances the ITEC in Assiut as a unique model of TVET in Egypt.
Sawiris Foundation for Social Development
The German Hotel School El Gouna was founded in 2002 to implement the German Dual System in cooperation with the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Leipzig/Germany (IHK-Leipzig), distinguished hotels in El Gouna and Hurghada and many other interested donors and cooperation partners. The school is owned now by the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development and managed by Rahn Education Company. In our school, all the hotel subjects are taught in German language through credited German experts. Our graduates get an immediate job at the same training hotel once he/she graduated from the school. It is worth to be mentioned that our school has participated in the competition of “Future Chef” organized by TVET II. Our school became the 4th out of 25 schools from all over Egypt at the first stage of the competition in November 2018.
