On 27th – 18th May 2025, Mohanad SalahEldin, AHK – Regional Manager of the Regional Office for Lebanon and Jordan, represented AHK Egypt in the EuroMeSCo Consultation Circles at The American University in Cairo, organized by European Institute of the Mediterranean, in partnership with Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies, The American University in Cairo, and with the support of the The EU Delegation to Egypt.
These Consultation Circles serve as a vital platform to shape the New Pact for the Mediterranean through structured dialogue that truly listens to Southern voices. The focus on co-creation and policy grounded in regional realities is what makes this initiative so timely and impactful.
Our AHK – Regional Manager of the Regional Office for Lebanon and Jordan joined the panel on “Unleashing the Potential of the Private Sector for Sustainable Growth.” The discussion delved into the complexities of enabling sustainable investment, particularly the paradox of incentives and subsidies:
- How can we design incentive frameworks that don’t unintentionally reward inefficiency?
- Are subsidies for fossil fuels still acting as a barrier to green investment, or can they be gradually redirected without causing social shocks?
In a different session, they also explored the urban design challenges faced by many Southern cities:
- How do we reconcile the organic growth and density of old cities with the sprawling, car-dependent new urban developments?
- What does inclusive, climate-resilient urban planning look like in a context where the majority of growth is yet to come?
