Potential for Liquid H2 Carriers from Egypt & Mena

On Wednesday, 11 February 2026, the German-Arab Chamber of Industry and Commerce convened key stakeholders for a technical #LOHC and #H2Uppp workshop spotlighting liquid hydrogen transport solutions and H2 project development pathways between the MENA region and Europe.

Held under the framework of the International Hydrogen Ramp-Up Programme (H2Uppp) and with support of the Egyptian-German Green Hydrogen Partnership (GH2P)    the session created space for practical, solution-oriented dialogue between German and Egyptian companies on H2/PtX project development across the hydrogen value chain.

H2Uppp - financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) and implemented by GIZ in cooperation with the AHK network - is supporting entrepreneurial engagement in the ramp-up of hydrogen in the Global South, including Egypt.

With expert contributions from Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies GmbH - presenting their H2Uppp co-financed project “LOHCBridge: corridor from North Africa to EU” - discussions focused on bridging infrastructure gaps, evaluating hydrogen carrier options, and advancing bankable Hydrogen/PtX project cases globally, with clear relevance for the Egyptian market.

A special online contribution by Sonja Butzengeiger from Perspectives Climate Research AG provided valuable insights into carbon credits within green ammonia production. Her input demonstrated how emission reductions along the value chain can be quantified and translated into carbon credit generation, offering an additional business case lever for green hydrogen and ammonia projects. The example illustrated how #H2Uppp-supported approaches can integrate climate finance mechanisms to enhance project bankability and investor attractiveness.

The workshop brought together the private sector, developers, and technology providers to exchange perspectives on enabling cross-border hydrogen trade, strengthening market readiness, and accelerating implementation.

As hydrogen momentum continues to roll, AHK Egypt remains committed to facilitating partnerships, fostering business dialogue, and advancing German-Arab cooperation in support of a competitive and sustainable hydrogen economy.
